Commissioner: New York police good with Muslims

NEW YORK, N.Y. – New York’s police commissioner says a film that critics say portrays Muslims in a bad light is inflammatory and wasn’t officially approved for police training.

At a news conference Friday, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the movie “The Third Jihad” was shown by mistake in a side room of a training centre.

The movie uses dramatic footage to warn against the dangers of radical Islam. Muslim groups say it teaches Americans to be suspicious of all Muslims.

Kelly appears for about 30 seconds of the 72-minute movie. He originally said he was not involved but later acknowledged giving the filmmakers an interview in 2007 and apologized.

Kelly defended the police department’s record with the city’s Muslim community and called the relationship “excellent.”
