Committee backs later closing for bars

A proposal to keep downtown Edmonton nightclubs open later has passed another step.

A proposal to keep downtown Edmonton nightclubs open later has passed another step.

The city’s executive committee has voted in favour of several recommendations of the report that suggests bars on Jasper Avenue stay open until 4 a.m.

Closing time now is at 2 a.m.

The report tries to address the growing congestion, crime and noise factor in the area.

The later closing time is one of several recommendations in a report made to address the nightlife along Jasper Avenue, which has included alcohol-fuelled violence.

Liquor sales would still end at 2 a.m., but bars would stay open an additional two hours.

It has been argued that the later bar hours would ease congestion and allow people to gradually leave the area over the course of the evening.

The report also calls for more city resources to encourage new business along Jasper, as well as a special entertainment zone police unit, more lighting, more cleaning, and additional late-night transportation.
