Cop charged in fatal crash

A Burnaby RCMP officer has been charged with dangerous driving causing death after she was involved in a collision that killed two men while responding to a report about a suicidal woman.

Const. Petina Kostiuk was left traumatized by the crash and is still recovering from her injuries, said the RCMP. She has not returned to duty.

On Oct. 31, police received two reports of a suicidal woman. Officers responded with their full emergency equipment activated, according to a release by RCMP Cpl. Alexandra Mulvihill.

One of the officers ran a red light at Kingsway and Royal Oak Avenue, striking a southbound vehicle. Both occupants, Albert Haczewski and Walter Hara, were killed. A third vehicle, which was stopped on Kingsway, was also hit.

A court date has not yet been announced.
