Crossbow backers, opponents clash

Tomorrow, crossbow hunters around the Lower Mainland will be taking to the woods for the first of nine days of regulated black bear bow hunting.

The issue of crossbows is at the forefront of the hunting debate after a Pemberton man shot a bear in a residential part of town on Aug 21.

Animal rights activist Glenn Gaetz, from Vancouver, said crossbows should be outlawed because they cause unnecessary suffering to the animal. But veteran hunter Dirk Schuirmann said when crossbows are shot properly, they kill instantly.
