A cruise ship crewman has been sentenced in Halifax to four months in jail after pleading guilty to crimes including possession of child pornography.

The Canada Border Services Agency says Jay Ar Ramos Trilles, 24, also admitted in Halifax provincial court Thursday to smuggling prohibited goods.

The agency, describing the man only as a non-resident, says he will be sent out of Canada after completing his sentence.

Officers arrested Trilles Tuesday after finding images on a laptop computer depicting child porn.

The agency says he will also be added to the National Sex Offender Registry in Canada and ordered to provide a DNA sample.

The Halifax Regional Police and RCMP were also involved in the investigation.

“I commend the outstanding work of the CBSA officers whose efforts led to this conviction,” Vic Toews, Canada’s minister of Public Safety, said in a release about the incident issued Thursday afternoon. “Our government is committed to getting this repulsive material off our streets and preventing the exploitation of children in Canada and around the world.”

An attempt to contact a media spokeswoman with the CBSA for more details about the incident was unsuccessful.
