Dorsey‘s TD tainted – Metro US

Dorsey‘s TD tainted

There was a tainted touchdown in the CFL last week. It never should have counted.

Sources have told Metro that CFL executives quietly informed the Edmonton Eskimos this week that a TD scored against them on a 69-yard punt return by Argonauts’ Dominique Dorsey last Saturday should not have stood because of two illegal blocks thrown on the play by Toronto players.

And if the TD wouldn’t have counted, the selection of Dorsey days later as the special-teams player of the week probably wouldn’t have happened, either.

Seems like a week hasn’t passed in the CFL this season when at least one official hasn’t blown a significant call. Perhaps the time has come for the CFL to emulate MLB and the NBA and suspend a zebra or two.

• And, speaking of suspensions, is there any reason for the NHL not to ban the Philadelphia Flyers’ Jesse Boulerice for at least 40 games for his viciousness in Vancouver Wednesday night? Who’d miss the goon?…The NHL’s top line these days, irrefutably, is in Ottawa — Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza and Dany Heatley. And to think new Senators coach John Paddock planned to separate the three…The Senators entered last night 5-0, without the services of goaltender Ray Emery (wrist surgery). From Heatley: “Everybody talks about a letdown after going to the Stanley Cup final (last season) but I honestly don’t feel that.”

• So I’m at a mall yesterday when I hear one teen turn to another to ask: “What do the Senators have in common right now with the 5-0 New England Patriots and the 5-0 Indianapolis Colts?”

“They all wear helmets,” came the quick response.

• Publicly, the Raptors have been raving about their training camp in Europe, but don’t expect them to be going again.

“I’m not sure these camps are all I wanted them to be,” NBA commissioner David Stern said. “It turns out that it’s hard for teams to have the opportunity to really train there.…I take full responsibility for it. I’m not sure it’s the best idea I ever had.”

• Word around the NBA on the Raptors is that they caught opponents off guard last season with their surprisingly effective play. Insiders figure that won’t recur this season.

The Raptors could learn from the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. Last season, the Saints stunned opponents with an unexpected winning season. This season, with teams more prepared for them, the Saints are winless.
