Drinking and driving memo not generic: Councillor

Mayor Peter Kelly sent out a memo to councillors warning them about the dangers of drinking and driving yesterday.

And according to one councillor, who spoke to Metro on condition of anonymity, the memo, although sent to all councillors, was specifically directed towards at least two, indicating Peter Lund and Reg Rankin.

He said other councillors had put pressure on Kelly to address the issue, and threatened to go to police if he didn’t.

Rankin said it was a personal matter and did not wish to comment.

Lund did not return phone calls or emails yesterday.

Kelly confirmed he had contacted police about the issue. However, the mayor would not specify any councillors and added none of the complaints he received mentioned anyone actually driving while drunk, but involved them drinking excessively and people being concerned they might have driven afterwards.

HRP spokeswoman Theresa Rath said police had been contacted on the general issue, but said no specific names were provided.
