Dubai police’s new weapon: A Lamborghini Aventador

Police in the Middle Eastern playground of Dubai have a new weapon in their fight against the city’s notorious speeding drivers: a Lamborghini Aventador.

The car, which retails for around $500,000, has a top speed of 217mph.

Dubai cops may well need all of that horsepower — standards of driving in Dubai are widely regarded as appalling, with drivers frequently exceeding the city’s top speed limit of 72mph and rates of fatal and serious accidents well in excess of American cities.

But Dubai police said the car was bought largely to show how modern, progressive and “class” the city is, according to a local police chief, rather than as a front-line speed-fighting vehicle.

The Aventador can go from 0 to 62mph in 29 seconds.

Dubai police is also upgrading other parts of its auto fleet with Chevy Camaros.
