Friday the 13th
Director: Marcus Nispel

People who always order the same beer and pizza toppings will love Marcus Nispel’s remake of Friday the 13th, one of the original and most successful of the slasher film franchises. Despite its upgrade in technical and acting prowess (seriously), the story retains its Old Testament premise of harsh retribution for the sexually frisky and the racially diverse.

Hockey-masked Jason Voorhees is as determined and unsocial as ever, dealing out death via blade, arrow, spike or axe to whomever crosses his path at Crystal Lake, his remote camp retreat.

A double prologue sets Jason’s “on” switch when his mom flips her lid, followed by a camping trip where he goes medieval on some uninvited guests. The two events set in motion a family quest saga that has worried brother Clay (Jared Padalecki from TV’s Gilmore Girls and Supernatural) seeking out his missing sister, in the accidental company of other hunks and hotties. We know what’s going to happen when Jason’s vorpal blade goes snicker-snack, and not even the order of dispatch is much of a mystery.

Depending on what DVD version you seek, there are extras galore, including an extended cut (11 minutes longer), a trivia track and various celebrations of the Jason mystique — anyone for The 7 Best Kills?
