Police allege a drug ring busted in Cape Breton Thursday imported drugs through Halifax and Montreal by plane, mail, and automobile.
Eleven people in Cape Breton were charged in connection with the ring, which federal RCMP and Cape Breton Regional Police allege dealt in marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy and steroids.
That brings the total number of arrests for the nine-month investigation to 16, with charges including conspiracy to traffic, possession for the purpose of trafficking, and participation in a criminal organization.
The 16 arrested range in age from 20 to 43 years old. Only half are accused of actually trafficking drugs, while the others with conspiracy to do so.
RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Brigdit Leger said while the ring dealt in Cape Breton, the bust affects the entire province.
“Any time that we’re able to get any drugs off our roads, it all contributes to making our roads a safer place,” she said.
“So even though the majority of the charges are in Cape Breton, it all has a positive influence on our province throughout.”
