VANCOUVER - Freedom was short for a killer parolee who vanished Thursday, only to be picked up by Kamloops, B.C., Mounties two days later.

RCMP confirm they have arrested Darnell Pratt when he failed to return to a halfway house just 24 hours after his statutory release from prison.

Pratt was 17 years old when he was convicted of manslaughter in 2005 for dragging Grant De Patie under the vehicle he was driving for more than seven kilometres.

De Patie was a gas station attendant and had tried to stop Pratt from leaving without paying.

De Patie's father Doug says he's elated knowing that Pratt is back in custody and that he'll sleep easier.

Grant De Patie's horrible death spurred legislation in the province that forces people to pay before they get their fuel. (CKNW)
