Festival makes light of stand up

The seventh annual Global Comedy Festival will be taking place in Vancouver yet again this year from September 16 – 26.

Will Davis is the artistic director of the festival. He says it’s host to some of the world’s best comedic talent as well as some of the best local talent.

“What we really strive for is for people to see their really funny local talent performing the same night, on the same stage as some of the biggest names in comedy,” says Davis. “As usual we’ll be booking around 100 acts, lots of whom are local.”

This year’s talent roster isn’t finalized, but there’s no doubt is will be littered with some of the best comedians in the world. The likes of Carol Burnett, Jay Leno, Steve Martin, David Cross, and Zach Galifianakis have performed at the Comedy Festival in years past.

“This is the biggest comedy event on the west coast of North America. We’ve seen a lot of our local and emerging talent go on to comedy shows all over the continent. Some have done Leno and Letterman, they’ve also been seen on CBC and CTV,” says Davis.

Some of those Canadian performers include George Stroumboulopoulos, Derek Edwards, Red Green (Steve Smith), Mike Macdonald along with many more.

The festival uses several venues over the ten days, including The Orpheum, The Centre for Performing Arts, The Vogue Theatre and Lafflines Comedy Club.

Davis, a comedian himself says attendance for the event has always been great and last year approximately 60,000 people attended. He adds there truly is something there for everyone.

“Although the theatre shows are typically adult, there are family shows including “Best of the Fest,” which is always rated PG,” he says.

Tickets go on sale in late June. Up to date info and tickets can be found at comedyfest.com.
