Forecast for messy travel on holiday weekend

If you’re traveling for the holidays, be forewarned: Boxing Day is going to be messy, weather-wise.

Christmas Day in Ottawa is expected to be a balmy -2 C, but a storm currently brewing over Texas is expected to move northeastward and start blanketing the eastern half of the continent before dawn on Boxing Day.

“The question is, what is it going to be here?” said Peter Kimbell, warning preparedness meteorologist for Environment Canada. “Our forecast reads snow or rain, high of plus four. I’m not going to hold my breath for it getting to plus four.”

There is enough warm air sitting above cold surface air for a good potential of freezing rain, he said.

Kimbell said he wouldn’t be surprised to see a mixed bag of snow, ice pellets and rain for all of Saturday.

A snowfall is expected on Sunday before temperatures start to dip again heading into the New Year.
