Geeks of every stripe hit sci-fi fest

The Radisson Hotel transformed into a giant conglomeration of geekdom this past weekend at the sixth annual Pure Speculation Festival.

Dozens of vendors displayed everything to satisfy gamers, comic lovers, sci-fi movie, television and book fans, and live action role playing (LARP) fans.

Joel Leckie, who also goes by his character name Caillas Dwin’anea, explained why he enjoys LARP over traditional video games.

“It’s the people interaction as well because it’s the characters that make the game real,” he said.

“It gives us a chance to go out and find people that we know that enjoy the same things we do.”

Getting people together who share the same interest is the drive for the festival.

“We decided that Edmonton really needed a convention and festival that incorporated all the various gaming groups and all the fan groups around town who don’t really talk to each other,” said Stanley Woo, events co-ordinator.

No matter how weird a fantasy or interest may be, guests will definitely find a place at Pure Speculation.
