People who volunteer get far more out their community involvement than they put in, insists Stephen Greenberg, winner of the United Way/Centraide Ottawa Community Builder of the Year award.
From the outside, it may seem like a lot of work, said Greenberg, who received the award Thursday night.
Greenberg started volunteering when he was 16 and insists his experience over the past 40 years has been tremendously rewarding.
“It sounds kind of trite, but the fact is it’s true,” he said. “The volunteer experience can profoundly enrich someone’s life. You work with some very, very special people and hopefully you watch as organizations grow and programs develop and good work gets done.”
Last year, his family committed $1 million to support after-school homework club programs.
“Ottawa has been very, very good to me and I consider it a responsibility and also a privilege to be able to put something back in,” he said.
