Grey Cup year means beefed-up security at MacMahon Stadium

Staff Sgt. Brett Marklund of the Calgary police will be at McMahon Stadium for Calgary’s opening pre-season game as part of the increased security presence this year.

“We arrested one individual that had brass knuckles in his pocket, and you know we have seen knives and that kind of thing, but certainly with brass knuckles there is only one purpose behind them.”

Around 30 officers will be patrolling the grounds, and this year they will be searching all bags that people bring into the stadium.

According to stadium manager John Haverstock, the officers will be joined by around 200 McMahon Stadium security personnel looking for weapons and alcohol.

“The whole program is certainly not a cutting edge program. This kind of program exists in just about every building similar to ours across North America [to] some degree, so we just want to get it to a degree we feel is efficient.”
