With a high turnover rate and more players joining hockey leagues every year, one of the city’s largest referee organizations is looking to boost its ranks for the upcoming season.

Chairman of Central Zone Referee Committee Dan Morris said sometimes the turnover rate can be as high as 30 to 40 per cent across the province.

“There can be a variety of reasons, maybe they move away, or start a family or can’t juggle it with their work, or some people might realize it’s not for them,” Morris said.

Morris added though, those who do referee hockey enjoy being part of the game.

Recreational hockey referee Tammy Moeller says she enjoys playing hockey but refereeing gives her a chance to still be a part of something she loves when she can’t play.

“I just love skating and keeping on the ice when I can, so it’s a lot of fun for me,” she said.

Morris said those interested can check out the website for more information or sign up at www.czrc.ab.ca.
