Group wants lower speeds near schools

The Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities is calling on the province to reduce speed limits for school zones.

The maximum speed for school zones and children’s play areas is 50 km/h, but UNSM wants that to drop to 30 km/h.

Port Hawkesbury Mayor Billy Joe MacLean, who is the UNSM president, has written the minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal to ask that the change be written into the province’s Motor Vehicle Act.
