Have board, will travel

What do duct tape, cardboard and 200 junior and senior high school students have in common?

All of them took part in yesterday’s cardboard boat race.

Skills Canada Alberta’s 10th annual Southern Alberta Cardboard Boat Race pitted students head-to-head in competition in SAIT’s swimming pool for bragging rights yesterday, according to organizer Shawna Bourke.

“They got to design, build and race their boats within their teams and against one another in a fun competition that allows them to apply what they learned,” Bourke said of the event.

Many of the students watched the WorldSkills Calgary 2009 competition and this is their chance to apply their skills ahead of the next competitions, she added.

“It’s just really a lot of fun for them and of course their parents and peers are here cheering them on.”
