Hawkesworth pushing for SE LRT line in Calgary by 2015

Mayoral Candidate Bob Hawkesworth wants to see the southeast leg of the C-Train up and running by 2015, with $800 million in funding from Alberta’s green TRIP program.

Hawkesworth filed his notice of motion with the city clerk to ask for council approval in having administration to set up the application for provincial funding from the provincial Transit Incentive Program (TRIP), specifically created for public transit, before the November deadline.

“It’s absolutely critical we meet all these deadlines so we are ready to roll when the west leg is finished,” said Hawkesworth.

He said the LRT should be a priority so 150,000 southeast residents have a quick route to downtown, allowing for more job growth downtown, and so business centres along the line can benefit sooner than later, giving access to 100,000 jobs in the area.

“I see it as a real opportunity to develop Calgary’s competitiveness and support our economic development,” said Hawkesworth.
