Hero dog put to sleep by mistake in Arizona

TUCSON – A dog that saved 50 U.S. soldiers from a suicide bomb in Afghanistan and was later featured on TV has been put to sleep by mistake.

Target, a German Shepherd mix, was a stray near the military base when the suicide bomber struck. She barked in warning, scaring off the bomber and saving countless lives. She was brought back to the U.S. and appeared on Oprah’s “Amazing Animals” segment.

The dog was later adopted by a family in Arizona — but she escaped from the backyard last week and ended up in an animal shelter, where she was put to sleep in error. A staff member has been suspended and the shelter’s director admitted procedures had not been followed.
