Huskies happy with playoff bye

What seemed improbable a month ago has become a reality for the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

What seemed improbable a month ago has become a reality for the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

The Huskies reeled off their fifth straight win on Saturday, 21-0 over the Acadia Axemen in Wolfville, to clinch first place and a bye to the Atlantic University Sport football final in two weeks.

The team’s 0-3 start that had many writing off the Huskies is all but forgotten.

“It’s a good way to go out,” said Huskies head coach Steve Sumarah.

“The big thing, and I’ve said it all along, is getting that bye. Getting that rest is huge.”

Jahmeek Taylor finished with a loss of seven yards on punt returns and did not secure the 63 yards needed to set the AUS record in that department.

The Huskies, 5-3, await the winner of Saturday’s semifinal between the Axemen (4-4) and Mount Allison Mounties (4-4) in Sackville, N.B.
