The Saint Mary’s Huskies are back on top in Atlantic University Sport women’s hockey.

The Huskies, who entered championship weekend in Moncton as the third seed, knocked off two powerhouse teams en route to their first championship in six years.

In yesterday’s final, the Huskies downed the host, defending champion and No. 1 seed Moncton Aigles Bleues 6-2. They also beat the second-ranked St. Francis Xavier X-Women 5-3 in Saturday’s semifinals.

Saint Mary’s jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two periods yesterday and received a goal and three assists from Kori Cheverie, two goals from Kyla Thurston and a goal and two assists from Lauren McCusker. Goaltender Jillian MacIssac made 27 saves.

The Huskies and host X-Women advance to nationals from March 11 to 14 in Antigonish.
