Infant death trial dates finalized

Trial dates for the man facing a charge of manslaughter and aggravated assault in the death of his infant daughter have been finalized.

Ashiqur Rahman appeared at Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Halifax on Thursday to confirm dates for what is expected to be a two-week trial.

A trial date starting on Feb. 14 has been agreed upon with the case being tried by judge alone.

Rahman, 24, has been in prison since he was arrested on July 24, 2009 and charged with aggravated assault after police responded to a call that his seven-week-old daughter, Aurora Breakthrough, was seriously injured. Aurora died in hospital three days later.

Rahman’s common-law partner, 23-year-old Jane Gomes, was also facing charges of manslaughter stemming from Aurora’s death, but pleaded guilty in April to the less serious charge of failing to provide the necessities of life. She received six months probation.
