Island hopping around Sweden

Stockholm is built on 14 islands and has a vast archipelago, easily accessible and with a broad range of activities.

You can cruise it in style, and splurge on seafood onboard or at top end restaurants on islands Oaxen and Grinda. You can island-hop budget style on the white boats that crisscross the 24,000 islands — from Landsort in the south to Örskär in the north and Svenska Högarna in the east — or experience the beauty and serenity of Stockholm’s archipelago paddling in a kayak. The unique Swedish law Allemansrätten — the Right of Public Access — gives everyone wide rights to roam and camp even on privately owned land.

Day-trips to islands Finnhamn or Grinda are perfect for swimming (and jumping from the cliffs), fishing and lovely walks. There are well-serviced youth hostels on these and many other islands. Advanced bookings are advised especially around Midsummer in late June — a holiday when every Stockholmer who can will go to the archipelago.

The water gets warm enough for a dip reaching temperatures around 18-20 C in July and August, which is swimmable at least for Swedes. The islands are everything from tiny rocks to ones with forests, sandy beaches.
