Job search can be derailed by social media activities

Your job application was turned down even though you have the education, skills and experience the company is looking for. Reason? Check your Facebook and Twitter posts.

Some employers say they base about half of their hiring decisions on applicants’ social media activities.

“What intrigues me enough to contact that person is what they have online, what they have done in the past,” said Sam Manna, director of client development and talent acquisition at Argentus Search Group.

“If the person doesn’t have a filter, if they don’t understand the line between what should be said and what shouldn’t be, then it’s kind of hard for us to put our name on that person and say that’s the best that we have.”
