Join in on the Bedford days celebrations

This year marks the 33rd time Bedford Days will be celebrated. It is happening from June 25 to July 1 and is a week-long celebration promoting the community as a great place to live, work and raise a family. Most of the events take place at DeWolf Park.

“It’s a longstanding tradition in Bedford,” says Monica Njoku, an assistant civic events coordinator with HRM.

“I have friends in their 20s now who remember going to it in when they were in high school, junior high school and when they were kids.”

This is part of the charm of Bedford Days, its ability to entertain a variety of age groups. From a pancake breakfast to a dog show, there’s something for all.

On June 27, the alFresco Film in the Park happens. It’s an outdoor showing of the 2009 film Hotel for Dogs, projected onto a giant inflatable screen.

“The great thing about the park is that it’s almost a natural amphitheatre,” says Njoku. “It kind of angles towards the water. They get to watch the movie while the sun sets over the basin, so it’s actually really nice.”

New to the event this year is Youth Night June 29. The featured entertainer is Juno-nominated DJ Skratch Bastid.

“That’s his hood basically,” says Njoku, explaining Bastid grew up in the area and went to Charles P. Allen High School.

Local youth bands will also perform.
