If I worked at Leva, would I get impatient with people ordering food?
“Yes, yes,” I would reply, “you would like to try the grilled panino. You want spinach salad and a gourmet pizza topped with goat gouda and organic chicken.”
Then my voice would drop and I would ask, “But seriously — when do you want the caffè affogato?”
My own duck prosciutto pizza ($18), topped with brie as well as fig and port jam, was a thin-crusted marvel. I followed it with my first ever caffè affogato ($5.50): finely-drawn Italian espresso poured over dark chocolate housemade gelato.
The hot, unsweetened espresso led a bitter charge across my palate, but was tripped up in the silken texture and cool, dark sweetness of that Leva gelato. It was a milkshake, all grown up.
Leva is a great standby, for office lunches, friendly get-togethers or a quick bite. Just remember to save room for an affogato.
