Licensing mandatory for B.C. home inspectors

Home inspectors in British Columbia will be the first to be licensed in the country, said Solicitor General John van Dongen.

Home inspectors in British Columbia will be the first to be licensed in the country, said Solicitor General John van Dongen.

“A home is the single biggest investment most British Columbians make, but financial risk can be the result of an incorrect or misleading report from an unqualified inspector,” van Dongen said.

After consulting consumers, the province decided the licence would fall under the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Authority.

In the past, home inspector training had been strictly on a volunteer basis. Starting March 31, it’ll be mandatory to be licensed.

There are approximately 300 to 400 home inspectors operating in B.C. and most are members of at least one professional association.
