Lighting the leg

Silence fell upon the stairs of the legislature Thursday as young and old stood still to watch Premier Ed Stelmach light up the legislature.

The premier, with the help of his grandson Ethan Stelmach, flicked the switch as the chorus rang. The immaculate display of 125,000 bulbs on 300 trees was complimented by mesmerizing sound of the University of Alberta’s Mixed Chorus. All ages gathered with family and friends to enjoy the complimentary hot chocolate and cookies and get in the spirit.
Natalia Shade, a first-time attendee, brought her daughter out in hopes of creating a family tradition. She noted the city’s growing sense of spirit, not just during the holiday season, but all through the year.

“I think it’s been growing definitely, I find that it has been growing way more in the past few years, with any festivities we have going on, there is just a lot more exposure than there was years ago,” says Shade.

Organizers encourage people to take advantage of the festivities at the legislature and the Edmonton Pedway from now until Dec. 23. Among other events, choral performances and free hot chocolate have been scheduled throughout the month.

Diana Panizzon, an event organizer, spoke highly of the event as a way to help citizens enjoy the holidays.

“Well, I think it just promotes good cheer with the people and brings a lot of people together, makes everyone feel nice and warm,” says Panizzon.
