Maison Martin Margiela for H&M: Avant-garde for the masses

This has been one hell of a week for high-low designer collaborations. First, it was announced that Prabal Gurung is the next big name to create a line for Target. Next, Narciso Rodriguez feted his new collection for Kohl’s DesigNation based on his trip to Istanbul. And yesterday, the granddaddy of them all took center stage: The unveiling of Maison Martin Margiela for H&M.

What makes this line so special is that it’s basically a greatest hits retrospective of the avant-garde brand, including pieces from when elusive founder Martin Margiela was at the creative helm. Expect to see the masculine silhouettes, oversized clothing, exposed seams and cool draping the house is known for, along with some of their more conceptual, kooky items, like mirrored leggings, candy wrapper clutch bags and a duvet-turned-coat. To celebrate the artsy collaboration,

H&M threw a fitting soiree at a dilapidated nine-story building downtown. At the party/ art installation, modern dancers performed in the looks for the audience, which included celebs such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Kanye West. We like how SJP summed it all up on the red carpet: “What can I say about H &M? All you have to do is look at the men and women lined up very early to get a piece of a collection like this. It’s make luxury available to people and that’s wonderful.”

Maison Martin Margiela with H&M will be available at select stores Nov. 15. For more info, visit www.hm.com.
