Man faces multiple charges after high-speed chase

A man faces multiple charges after police were involved in a high-speed chase through two provinces early Thursday morning.

At 12:05 a.m., a Gatineau police officer saw a vehicle that had been reported stolen from Ottawa on Garneau Street.

When the officer exited his vehicle to arrest the occupant, the driver allegedly tried to escape, said Gatineau police Const. Isabelle Poirier.

“He almost hit the police officer with the car,” said Poirier.

A chase ensued. The man turned onto Des Allumettieres Boulevard, at times driving in the wrong lane, Poirier said.

“He took the Portage Bridge in the wrong way too,” said Poirier. The vehicle led police down Wellington Street, in Ottawa, then Rideau and Chapel Streets, before coming to a dead end at a fence and a garbage area.

There were no injuries and no damages to property.

A 25-year-old man of no fixed address faces charges of possession of stolen goods, assault on a police officer with a vehicle, dangerous driving and obstructing a police officer.
