ManCount reveals startling HIV rate

Approximately 18 per cent of sexually active gay men in Vancouver are HIV-positive, a new survey claims.

Organized by several prominent provincial health organizations, the study, known as ManCount, similarly revealed that only 2.5 per cent of homosexual men currently infected were unaware that they were carrying the disease.

More than 3,000 interviews and 100 blood samples were gathered for the survey, which ran from August 2008 to February 2009.

ManCount’s full report will be released at the sixth annual B.C. Gay Men’s Health Summit, held today and tomorrow at SFU’s Harbour Centre campus.
