On the occasion of the UN Climate Summit, to be held on September 23 at the UN Headquarters in New York
City, Metro International will launch the 10th edition of METRO Photo Challenge, the world’s largest photography
competition.

The competition will be widely promoted to the 18 million daily readers of the newspaper in 24 countries, as
well as by the UN’s network of information offices around the world. The partnership with the UN presents an
extraordinary opportunity for metropolitans everywhere to participate in the call to action on this vital global
issue and to put photography at the service of positive global change.

The competition is open to everyone everywhere. The theme chosen with the United Nations Climate Change
team is: “My Green City.” Details of the 2014 Metro Photo Challenge’s theme, categories and grand prize will
be announced on the day of the launch on 23 September.

“To quote UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, ‘Climate change is not a far-off problem, it is happening now,
with real consequences,’” said Afsane Bassir-Pour, Director of the UN Regional Information Centre in Brussels,
“but, adds the Secretary-General,‘ change is in the air.’ And METRO International’s decision to dedicate the
10th Metro Photo Challenge to the climate is another sign of this change,” said Ms. Bassir-Pour.

“The key goal is always to activate and motivate our readers with topics that will challenge,” said Francisco
Contreras, Metro’s Global Marketing Director. “We at Metro are happy and very excited to have the United
Nations as our partner for this year’s Metro Photo Challenge. We believe that the collaboration will inspire our
readers and photographers from around the world to participate in this year’s challenge.”

METRO PHOTO CHALLENGE

Metro Photo Challenge was introduced ten years ago in Sweden and ran globally for the first time in 2007. The
contest has become a truly credible and important event for professional and amateur photographers alike. In
2013, 40,000 photographers submitted more than 120,000 images, making Metro Photo Challenge the world’s
largest photography competition.

THE UNITED NATIONS – CLIMATE SUMMIT 2014

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is hosting the Climate Summit to engage leaders and advance climate
action and ambition. The Summit will serve as a public platform for leaders at the highest level –UN Member
States, as well as finance, business, civil society and local leaders from public and private sectors – to catalyze
ambitious action on the ground to reduce emissions and strengthen climate resilience and mobilize political
will for an ambitious global legal agreement by 2015 that limits the world to a less than 2-degree Celsius rise
in global temperature.
