A Liberal MP accused the government of dragging its feet on helping Brenda Martin get out of a Mexican jail, and a former juror from Paul Bernardo's trial said the convicted killer wouldn't stand a chance of early release if it were up to the 12 men and women who originally convicted him. Another Liberal MP, Belinda Stronach, challenged Canadians to buy bed nets to help stop the spread of malaria in Africa.

CIBC World Markets said that gas will cost $1.40 a litre this summer and $2.25 by 2012, the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors said that the price of meat was also going to increase, and BMO said that the loonie would cost less. The Bank of Canada agreed with those predictions and furthered that the economy was hovering just above recession. "Perhaps," said one observer, "it's time to give some serious thought to buying on the basis
of choosing goods that are actually produced near where you live."

The United Nations' World Food Program needed millions of dollars to cope with rising food prices, and the United Nations Relief Works Agency stopped distributing food to refugees in Gaza because, they said, the Israeli blockade of the Hamas-ruled territory has left their vehicles with no fuel. The head of Interpol warned of the "real possibility" of violent acts at the Olympic games, and the White House warned that Syria was helping North Korea work on a nuclear reactor. Prince William and Prince Harry swapped places as "good prince" and "bad prince."

FHM magazine declared Megan Fox the sexiest woman in the world, and police were investigating claims that singer Amy Winehouse attacked a man in London.
