Mix of Six: Nov. 19-21

Metro picks this weekend's best events.

Barrington Levy
Saturday, Sound Academy
The world has heard Barrington Levy’s high-pitched teenage voice in Collie Weed mature into the legendarily soulful “mellow canary” sound he has now. Though he has dramatically slowed his musical output, he’s a sustained presence in the reggae community and continues to lend his voice to other artists like Handsome Boy Modeling School and Rascalz. $34.25. 8 p.m.

Sarah Harmer
Saturday, Massey Hall
Since her Polaris Prize nomination in 2005 for I’m a Mountain, Sarah Harmer’s only musical appearances have been as a backup artist for the likes of Neko Case, The Weakerthans and Great Lake Swimmers — indie staples who are all newer members to the scene than this Burlington stalwart. After a five-year hiatus, Harmer has returned with her recent album, Oh Little Fire, and a much-anticipated North American tour. With Hey Rosetta! $42.50. 8 p.m.

Cowboy Junkies
Friday, Koerner Hall
For those who’ve lumped the Cowboy Junkies into the melancholy country-folk category, Renmin Park will come as a surprise. The album draws its title from a park in Jinjiang, China, where guitarist/songwriter Michael Timmins fell in love with traditional Chinese music. Renmin Park is the first instalment of The Nomad Series, a planned four-album opus to celebrate their 25th anniversary. $35-$55. 8 p.m.

Bring Me The Horizon
Friday, Kool Haus
The U.K.’s crown princes of metalcore, Bring Me The Horizon’s latest LP, There Is A Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is A Heaven, Let’s Keep It A Secret has what’s got to be the longest title since Fiona Apple’s 437-character When The Pawn... in 1999. If it weren’t for their jackhammer riffage, or Oliver Sykes’ disembowelling scream, we might think BMTH were going soft. But that’s a big “if.” $18.50.
5 p.m. All ages.

Caron Wheeler at Hot Stepper Productions’ 15th Anniversary
Best known as the voice of Soul II Soul hits including Back to Life, Caron Wheeler has also recorded two solo albums and worked with acts including The Jam, Erasure, P.I.L., Maxi Priest and Erykah Badu. She’ll perform songs both old and new alongside DJs including fellow Soul II Soul collaborator Simon Laws, a.k.a. The Funky Ginger. Saturday, at 99 Sudbury, $25 for advance tickets at Play de Record, Cosmos, Delphic, Spago and milkaudio.com.
CD Release

More Or Les
MC, producer and DJ More Or Les has been at the heart of this city’s hip-hop underground for a decade. The witty, rich-voiced Les returned to the studio to record his third full-length, Brunch With A Vengeance; it’s an effortlessly diverse album, filled with conscious commentary, heavy doses of humour and guest spots by many people appearing at this very show. Saturday at Rancho Relaxo. $10 (includes CD).
