‘Modern country is the next trend’

To combine modern space with country comfort, Port of Newcastle had to learn a few old tricks.

The newest development by Kylemore Communities located in Newcastle, Ont., offers spaciously modern homes infused with a countryside feel. Think country sensibilities with all the style and substance of a modern sanctuary.

“I think modern country is the next trend — I’d almost call it glamorous country,” said Jane Lockhart, designer and star of W Network’s Colour Confidential.

Lockhart wanted to create a modern look that allowed for comfort and practicality to better survive the wear-and-tear of daily life.

The first of two models, the 3800-square-foot “Yacht” home, is trimmed in oceanic blues and features oiled-oak floors, cream coloured cabinetry and warm tones throughout to maintain the sense of a relaxing beach house. The 3200-square-foot “Camber” model features hardwood floors, crown moulding and softer contrasts like butter-creams and yellows to create the feel of a modern countryside retreat.

Unlike ultra-modern designs, which often feature materials that lose their sheen or collect fingerprints quickly, Lockhart’s combination of modern geometry with old-world trimmings and colours lets owners enjoy a sleek look safe in the knowledge that their floor won’t wear out a few months after the kids start running all over it.

“Our job as designers is to make houses look beautiful but also to have them wear well. You still want that ‘Wow!’ factor when people walk in but you don’t want to be up all night to get it,” Lockhart said.

Dark hardwood floors in the Camber model feature a finish that shows off the roughness of the wood grain, which helps hide minor damage while maintaining the nice dark sheen many homeowners love.
