A slow-burning tragedy set in contemporary civil-war-torn Chad, Mahamat Saleh Haroun's A Screaming Man concerns a 60-year old former swimming champion (Youssouf Djaoro) who loses his job as an upscale hotel pool attendant. Compounding his frustration is the fact that the post has gone to his son. The outcome of this generational impasse is perhaps predictable, but the filmmaking accumulates a coiled, quiet force.
