Take Shelter sees imposing actor Michael Shannon getting a wide canvas to expand his brand of slow burn unease, starring as a rural Ohio family man who has apocalyptic visions of greasy rain, poison gas, murder and death.
Is he truly mad or is there something to his grim prophecies?
Director Jeff Nichols doesn’t reveal the answer until the last sequence and though his film is slow, Shannon is so gripping (as is Jessica Chastain as his long suffering wife), his character so complex and his descent so tragic that we can’t help but watch, fascinated and frightened.
