It becomes clear about midway through the climactic battle scene in The Smurfs that the adorable blue characters are pretty much just using their namesake favourite word in place of cursing.

And thinking too much about the implications of the plot will only lead to migraines.

Neal Patrick Harris and Glee scene-stealer Jayma Mays do their best, but the stunt-casting of the blue heroes (with George Lopez and Katy Perry in major roles) grates.

Spoiler alert: The obvious and awful joke — “I smurfed a girl and I liked it” appears — and doesn’t even make sense, since there‘s only one girl Smurf. Despite being beloved kids’ entertainment, the film is targeted at the 25 to 40 crowd. Whose smurfing idea was that?
