‘My personal reflections’

Fourway Flashers front man draws inspiration from his hectic life

The Fourway Flashers are Jesse Capon, from left, Tom Desson and Adam Faux.

With a baby on the way any day now, and the upcoming release of his band’s first album, Tom Desson has been leading a very hectic life.

The Fourway Flashers’ vocalist and guitarist takes pride in his work, especially after having written all the songs on the group’s self-titled debut album, which is now available in stores.

“Everybody’s really excited. It’s been a long time coming since we did most of the work here at home,” says Desson. “It’s good and bad because it takes a little bit longer because we have the time to spend here, so we tend to take the time. But the guys in the band are excited about the release … and everybody’s happy with the sound, too.”

Fourway Flashers are Desson, Adam Faux, Jesse Capon and Tim Bovaconti — when he’s not touring with artists such as Ron Sexsmith or Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings.

The album got its start a couple years back as a collaboration between Desson and Faux. Desson did the writing, then he and Faux produced and recorded the tracks together at a collection of different studios.

“The songs are my creation, I wrote them all. The stories behind them, I guess, are my personal reflections and observations of the things I see and hear, basically,” he says. “I guess all of it’s personal to some extent, personal reflections and reflections of just things that I observe of other people — relationships and experiences.”

The easiest way to explain Fourway Flashers’ sound is simple – it’s rock ‘n’ roll. Though the band members are all eclectic and Desson’s tastes are very broad, with a lot of British influences, each member brings his own unique flair and touch to the creative process.

“We didn’t do any rehearsals, we just went right in and started going. We’re all big fans of classic rock ‘n’ roll, but all still very much into modern music as well,” says Desson. “I’d like to think it’s a really original sound, and I’d like to say it’s Canadian.”

Desson has already started writing for the next album, though he’s currently putting most of his focus on pushing this record and planning a tour across Ontario.
