NAC’s dance season takes a global view

Cathy Levy is hoping to change the way you think about dance.

“What dance is has broadened over the years,” said the dance producer at the National Arts Centre.

“Every year, we try to find dance that brings something new and different, and pushes the idea of what dance is,” said Levy. “And we’re trying to get the audience to embrace what dance is around the world.”

Professional dance from across the globe converges at the NAC in its 2010-2011 season.

“It’s an international season that shows a broad spectrum of contemporary and classical dance from some of the world’s greatest creators, some well-known, and some for the audience to discover,” said Levy, who unveiled the lineup last night.

This season features four series and special presentations with 46 performances of 17 events by 17 different companies.

Professional dance for theatre has always been a part of the National Arts Centre, said Levy.

For those who are new to dance, there are lots of choices.

Savion Glover, arguably the best tap dancer in the world, returns to the NAC in February 2011, and the NAC has the Canadian debut of BeijingDance, a Chinese dance company in March 2011.

Other season highlights include the Mariinsky Ballet; new work by Edouard Lock and La La La Human Steps; the NAC debuts of Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and Vuyani Dance Theatre, Alberta Ballet’s all-new The Nutcracker and works from the National Ballet of Canada and Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
