New restaurant comes to English Bay

The Cactus Club is giving the concession stand at English Bay a facelift.

Construction is expected to begin later this year on a restaurant near the old bathhouse at the foot of Davie Street near Beach Avenue that will provide 79 indoor seats, 70 outdoors and 48 at a concession stand off to the side.

While it’ll be owned and operated by the Cactus Club, the restaurant is expected to have a different name.

“The restaurant will not be on the beach,” said Aaron Jasper, chair of the Park Board. “It will be set back up the hill up to the road. There’s a lot of glass (and it won’t) obstruct views. It fits well into the neighbourhood.”

Jasper said the Cactus Club will cover the cost of construction, pay $240,000 in rent to the Park Board and four per cent on any revenues of more than $4 million.

“Some folks have been concerned about the commercialization of the beaches but we have relationships with other restaurants and this isn’t something new,” Jasper said. “The bonus is also we get revenues that we get to put back into the very services that we provide.”

The restaurant is expected to be open for business mid-summer of 2011.
