Most themed restaurants and pubs come off as hokey or trying too hard.

Not the Queen & Beaver Public House. An old house restored with charm is a comfortable hangout for those wanting to grab a pint, but not be subjected to foxes, fiddles and other F’s.

And finally there’s a pub where the food is as good as everything else.

Being half-British, I was excited by the menu: rabbit pie, bags of crisps, sardines, toasts, etc. Toasts are just what they sound like – bread, toasted (or broiled) with cheese or other toppings.

Devilled Lamb’s Kidneys & Dripping Toast ($10) is understandably not for everyone, but floured and dusted with cayenne pepper, it is British comfort food at its best. My companion has 3 Yr. Old Cheddar & Smokey Tomatoes ($9), accompanied by salad and pickles, which soothes his soul.

If you thought British food was boring, think again.
