NSCC worker strike averted as tentative agreement reached

A strike by Nova Scotia’s community college workers has been averted.

According to an email sent to Nova Scotia Community College staff Monday morning, a tentative agreement was reached between the Nova Scotia Teachers Union and the province less than 24 hours before 930 teachers and support staff were to hit the picket lines.

“I know that this has been an incredibly difficult time for us all,” Joan McArthur-Blair, president of the Waterfront Campus in Dartmouth, wrote in the email. “Although the process is not yet complete, this is a day to be positive.”

The terms of the 11th hour agreement, which will now be presented to the workers for a ratification vote, are not yet known.

Negotiations had broken off earlier this month after the two sides were unable to come to a consensus regarding issues surrounding wages and benefits. The NSTU was seeking at least a 2.9 per cent increase this year and next year, which would put them on par with public school teachers.
