NWMP celebrates 137th

A ceremonial sword cut a special birthday cake yesterday morning.

The 137th anniversary of the formation of the North West Mounted Police was celebrated at Fort Calgary with cake, educational activities and face painting. Recognized annually on Victoria Day, the event brought together residents, tourists and retired NWMP officers.

According to Nicky Peeters, special events and marketing co-ordinator, “the day is a fun way to bring attention to this important day in our history.”

Dal Lagenberger of High River was one of the retired NWMP officers volunteering to help with the event.

Lagenberger served with the NWMP for 27 years. “When I was seven or eight, I decided I wanted to be a policeman,” he said. “I joined the Mounted Police since I was from a small town and they were the local police.”

Lagenberger served throughout Alberta, from Fort Vermillion to Lethbridge. “We dealt with the full spectrum of crime, from murder investigations to theft to traffic control,” he said.

“I really enjoyed my career.”

Also on site was the Raven Totem Pole from Jasper, as it makes its way back to the Haida people of Masset, B.C. After 94 years of standing in the park, it was lowered due to safety hazards.

Visitors can view the totem pole until May 30.
