Oceans, mountains key to rain

Ever wonder what it is that gives Vancouver its drizzly climate?

Ever wonder what it is that gives Vancouver its drizzly climate?

According to meteorologist Lisa Coldwells of Environment Canada, it all comes down to our proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the mountains.

“Generally … weather moves from the west to east,” she said.

“Directly to our west is a nice big ocean and we get Pacific systems coming in over Vancouver. They hit the mountains and it just rains on the city.

“You go to Merritt on the other side (of the mountains) and you see a stark contrast. It’s so much drier because the weather systems have rained themselves out.”
