Officer off the hook in fatal car accident

There will be no charges against a Calgary police officer in relation to a crash that killed two men who were fleeing from police in a stolen vehicle.

Byron Gray, 29, and his nephew, Ryan Gray, 18, were killed June 9 when they fled from police and crashed into a northeast home.

Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) director Clifton Purvis found the 13-year veteran officer, a dog handler, acted lawfully in pursuing the vehicle at “moderate speeds” of between 35 km/h and 100 km/h.

“The driver of the vehicle was to have a blood alcohol level double the legal limit and had also consumed cocaine and marijuana,” Purvis said, adding the driver hit speeds of up to 155 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.
