Old murder evidence solid: RCMP

A 1992 homicide suspect has been turned over to Canadian authorities to answer to the charge, and police say the evidence against him remains solid 17 years later.

Michael Desmarais of Edmonton was linked to the murder of Gordon Mills in 1992 by forensic and witness evidence located by the RCMP.

Desmarais made a court appearance in Lethbridge yesterday to respond to the accusation, Cpl. Clayton Blight told Metro by phone from Calgary yesterday.

“(The case) was always actively investigated,” he said, adding there’s no concern of a crack in the evidence because it took so long.

After the murder of Mills, Desmarais served 20 years in a jail in the United States for a murder in 1992. The accused will make a second court appearance, said Blight, but he did not say when.
