Optimism floats with boat expo

Times are tough, but not in the boating business, says John Kittler, owner of Hyperactive Water Sports.

Times are tough, but not in the boating business, says John Kittler, owner of Hyperactive Water Sports.

Prior to this weekend’s Calgary Boating Expo, Kittler sold a $90,000 boat. He thinks the show will signal the launch of spring and bring optimism.

“I wouldn’t want to work in a Ferrari dealership, where you’re selling ‘selfish’ toys,” he said. “Boating runs in a different category — the whole family can enjoy it. People are coming in our doors as much as ever before.”

The customer who bought the $90,000 boat was going through a tough time, Kittler said. “He had lost some money in the stock market and things like that. But he said, ‘You know what, life’s too short,’ and bought it anyway.”

The Calgary Boating Expo runs Friday to Sunday at the Telus Convention Centre.
